The Importance of Cat & Dog Checkup & Preventive Care

Wellness exams are an essential part of maintaining your pet's good health from their puppy or kitten days through to their senior years.

When your cat or dog's checkups are combined with regular vaccinations, parasite prevention and proper nutrition, you are providing them with their best chance at optimal lifelong health.

At your dog or cat's routine exam, we can help prevent health conditions from developing in your pet, or discover them early, when they are easier to treat.

What You Can Expect At Your Pet's Checkup

Your veterinarian will give your pet a thorough examination in order to get a full understanding of your cat or dog's overall health. You can expect the following elements at your pet's veterinary checkup in Egg Harbor Township:

General Condition

Your pet's physical condition and general demeanor can provide you with insight into their overall health. How your cat or dog stands, walks, their alertness level, and whether they are a healthy weight for their size are all important clues to their general wellbeing.

Coat & Skin

At your pet's checkup, we will look at your cat or dog's coat and skin for signs of any issues, including excessive oiliness or dryness, lumps, bumps, dandruff, or abnormal hair loss or shedding.

Face & Head

We examine your pet's eyes, ears, and nose for discharge or abnormalities. We'll also look at their mouth for any symptoms of oral health conditions such as plaque buildup or periodontal disease.

Internal Health

Heart rate and rhythm, pulse, and blood pressure are critical to the heart health of your pet. We'll test these to see if they're normal. The lungs will then be checked for evidence of abnormal breathing.

Lymph nodes are also examined for pain or swelling, and we will also inspect the abdomen to make sure the intestines, kidneys, bladder, spleen, liver, and stomach all feel normal, and that your pet is not showing any signals of discomfort.

Review of Findings

When your pet's routine wellness exam is over, your vet will designate time to discuss any concerns they might have regarding your cat or dog's overall health and discuss with you any nutritional requirements your pet may need.

Checkups for Puppies & Kittens

Puppies and kittens require a specific level of veterinary care during the first few weeks of their lives to get a healthy start to life.

Our vets will give your new furry friend a comprehensive physical examination, the required vaccinations, and deworming medication. We'll also test your pet for intestinal parasites. You will be given a puppy or kitten 'kit' that comes with samples and educational materials to assist you in taking care of your newest family member.

Never hesitate to call us with any questions or concerns you have regarding the care of your new pet, either at your visits or following your appointments.

When your puppy or kitten's checkup is over, you will come back regularly for their mandatory booster shots

Seniors

With the new advancements made in veterinary knowledge and care, as well as better nutrition options and newer therapies, senior pets are living longer than ever.

This is good news for both pets and their owners but, it also means that special attention needs to be given to your senior cat or dog's routine healthcare as they continue to age. As your pet passes middle age, regular examinations become even more important in ensuring their continuing health and longevity.

On top of the routine wellness procedures, we conduct for all adult pets, we give special attention to your senior pet's possible geriatric conditions, including arthritis or decreased vision.

Additional laboratory tests might be suggested for aging pets to obtain more detailed information about your senior cat or dog's overall health and wellbeing.
