Steps to Take In A Pet Emergency
If you and your pet are encountering a veterinary emergency, take the following steps:
- Call Ahead If Possible - If you're experiencing an emergency during our regular business hours contact us immediately. For after-hours care, call the emergency animal hospital stated above and inform them that you are on the way.
- Follow Instructions Provided - When you call the emergency veterinarian they may give you instructions to help you provide your pet with first aid or otherwise make your four-legged friend as comfortable as possible. Follow these instructions carefully.
- Remain Calm - Remain calm and be mindful around your pet. When animals experience pain they sometimes react negatively towards anyone trying to help and may scratch or bite.

Newkirk Family Veterinarians offers urgent and emergency care for cats, dogs, and other exotic pets during our regular hours of operation. It's always best to call us ahead of time if you can however, we know that in emergency situations it isn't always possible.
If we can't squeeze your pet into our busy schedule, we suggest contacting the after-hours emergency vet location displayed above.

- What situations require emergency veterinary care?
Below we have listed examples of emergencies that require immediate care:
- Obvious signs of pain or extreme anxiety
- Severe bleeding or bleeding that doesn't stop
- Choking, difficulty breathing, or continuous coughing/gagging
- Fractured bones or severe lameness
- Refusal to drink for 24 hours or more
- Seizures and/or staggering
- Bleeding from nose, mouth, rectum, or blood in the urine
- Inability to urinate or pass feces, or pain associated with urinating or passing feces
- Injuries to the eye(s)
- Your pet has ingested something poisonous (such as antifreeze, xylitol, chocolate, rodent poison, etc.)
- Severe vomiting or diarrhea; 2+ episodes in 24-hours
- Heat stress or heatstroke
- Unconsciousness
- How long will we have to wait to see the vet?

Some veterinary emergencies need intensive overnight care. At Newkirk Family Veterinarians we are able to provide overnight care for pets in need.
While in our care, our knowledgeable and passionate team will treat your pet as if they were our own.
- What types of animals do you treat?
Our emergency veterinarians are mostly experienced with cats and dogs, but we will see other small animals, such as birds and rodents.
