What are soft tissue surgical procedures?
Soft tissue surgeries are an umbrella under which most major surgical procedures fall. Soft tissue surgeries are any surgeries that deal with your pet's soft tissues, including skin, internal organs, tumors, hernias or any other defects affecting their function. Essentially, any surgery that does not deal with bones, joints, ligaments or tendons is a soft tissue surgery.

- What happens during the consultation appointment?
During our pre-operative consultation, we will review your pet's medical history and perform a comprehensive physical examination to determine their general health as well as the nature of their condition. We will also use any other diagnostic tests that may be appropriate.
Diagnostic testing may include radiographs (x-rays), ultrasound and biopsies. Once the results are back, a surgery plan is made and discussed with you.
- Do the consultation appointment and surgery happen on the same day?
No. The consultation appointment is a pre-operative exam that your animal must undergo prior to surgery. Once any diagnostic test results have come back from our lab, a surgery appointment can be scheduled.
- How long does surgery take?
Soft tissue surgeries at our veterinary hospital generally last between two and four hours. The duration depends on the kind of surgery being performed and on your pet's unique case, so you should ask your vet about how long the surgery will take.
- Does my pet have to stay overnight?
Many of our patients need to stay in the hospital overnight after surgery so that we can monitor them as they recover from the procedure. Depending on the type of surgery that is performed and how quickly they recover after anesthesia and surgery, your pet may be able to go home on the same day.
